McDaniel 72, Gettysburg 69 |
Westminster, MD — Terror Dodges Bullets, Kristy Costa has Career Night Coming off of one of the worst shooting nights in her career on Tuesday, McDaniel senior Kristy Costa (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) redeemed herself going eight-for-eight from the field. She scored a career high 28 points to lead McDaniel to its first Centennial Conference win of the season, a 72-69 defeat of Gettysburg. Costa finished her night tied with Amy Watson (Lancaster, PA / Hempfield) for a team high in the rebound column. Each player hauled in seven boards for McDaniel. Besides being perfect from the field, Costa hit on 12-of-15 shots at the line. Her performance moved her to 982 career points, leaving her 18 points shy of becoming the 12th McDaniel women’s player to reach the 1,000-point mark. Costa also recorded three steals, all of which resulted in easy lay-ups. The Bullets turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 26 McDaniel points. Gettysburg was only able to muster 17 points on its 20 gift possessions. McDaniel threatened to run away early taking a 10-point lead midway through the first half. The Terror still held a 10-point advantage with 2:56 left in the first period, but an 8-2 Gettysburg run to the locker room cut McDaniel’s lead to four, 33-29.The Bullets cut into that margin midway through the second half as their three leading scorers, Jen Bengel, Jamie Marshall, and Amy Tarbell began to dominate down low at both ends of the floor. Megan Hartman finally tied it at 46 apiece hitting back-to-back foul shots with 11:09 left in the game.
The teams traded leads, but Gettysburg never managed to put more than four points between itself and the Terror. Trailing 65-62 with three minutes left in the game, McDaniel’s Sara Franz nailed a trey to draw the teams even.
The Green Terror would not fall behind the rest of the way.
Katy Powell (Smithsburg, MD / Smithsburg) connected on a 12-foot jumper with 2:18 left in regulation, and followed that possession with a three-point play that essentially sealed the contest.
The junior attacked the lane from the right side and was fouled on a four-foot jumper. She made good on the free throw to give McDaniel a 70-67 lead. She scored seven of her 12 points in the final three minutes of the game.
Gettysburg cut it back to a one-point game with five seconds to play when Tarbell hit a pair of free throws. The Bullets’ fouled Powell on the inbound pass. She sunk her free throws at the other end for the final score, 72-69.
Bengel threw up a prayer from behind the arc at the buzzer, but her shot rimmed out. She finished the game with double double, leading her team in both points and rebounds with 18 and 12, respectively. Marshall recorded 14 points, and Tarbell accounted for 10 points for the Bullets.
With the win, McDaniel improves to 4-3, 1-2, while Gettysburg slides to 3-4, 2-2. McDaniel returns to action on Saturday at Bryn Mawr |
From The Carroll County Times
McDaniel women’s basketball coach Becky Martin was close to putting up posters that said “Missing: Kristy Costa.”
But Costa found herself scoring a career-high 28 points as the Green Terror defeated Gettysburg College 72-69.
“I think I’m just tired of getting fouls and sitting next to coaches on the bench, and hearing them tell me what I had a potential to do,” Costa said.
Costa was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. She also led McDaniel (4-3, 1-2 Centennial) with seven rebounds.
Her aggressive play helped carry the Terror at times.
“She was awesome tonight,” Katy Powell said. “She got on the break and that’s what gets her going. When she gets out on the fast breaks she’s able to make things happen.
“She was so clutch for us. Had she not played that way it’s a different ballgame.”
Martin said Costa had not been pleased with her play early in the season. She came into the game averaging 9.3 points on 36.5 percent shooting and was battling her own self confidence.
The senior stepped up and helped McDaniel avoid an 0-3 start in conference play.
“She certainly had a breakout game,” Martin said. “I joked with everybody in the locker room postgame, ‘I don’t know where Kristy Costa has been, but welcome back.’ ”
Still it took same late heroics from Powell to lift the Terror past the Bullets (3-4, 2-2). She finished with 12 points, five of which came in the final 20 seconds.
With the game tied at 67, Powell drove into the lane drew a foul and hit a jumper while falling down. She sank the free throw to give McDaniel a 70-67 lead.
Amy Tarbell hit two free throws for the Bullets with seven seconds remaining. Powell was fouled on the in-bounds and sank both free throws.
Jennifer Bengel – who led Gettysburg with 18 points – got off a last-second 3-pointer, but her shot rimmed out giving McDaniel the win.
After opening the conference with two road games, the Terror were eager to get a victory in their final home game of 2005.
“We feel comfortable here,” Powell said. “We really wanted to get ourselves on a good roll starting with this game.”
Costa’s performance was critical as leading scorer Sara Franz was held to four points.
Gettysburg held a 59-55 lead with six minutes to play. Costa got a steal and converted the layup.
After the teams traded baskets she had another steal, and hit one of two free throws to pull McDaniel within one at 61-60 with 4:46 remaining.
“We need different people to step up,” Martin said. “We certainly needed it tonight. The crowd enjoyed it, we enjoyed it and I guarantee she enjoyed it.”

Lancaster, PA —Costa’s Career High Delivers a McDaniel Win |
Kristy Costa (Galloway, NJ / Absegmi) turned in the third best scoring effort in the history of McDaniel College women’s basketball to lead her team to a 95-85 win at Franklin & Marshall. The senior foward dropped 34 points on her hosts hitting 12 of 14 shots fom the field, and 10 of her 13 shots at the line. She also gathered a team-high six rebounds.
McDaniel entered this evening’s game in desperate need of a win to provide a small margin of error heading into the finfinal days of the regular season. A loss would have forced McDaniel to produce wins in both of their final games, including a road trip to Allentown to face nationally ranked Muhlenberg on Thursday.
Costa’s effort matched the 34 points scored by her current head coach, Becky Martin, who hit that total twice during the 1979-1980 season. Costa came up five points shy of Martin’s school record of 39 points, and two points shy of Katie Haley’s 36 points back on January 30, 1997.
Her 34 points represent a career high, as well as her first foray into the 30’s in the points column. The 30 point barrier has only been topped 18 times prior in the teams’ recorded history dating back to the 1920’s.
The win improved McDaniel’s season mark to 17-6, 11-5, while the Diplomats fell to 9-15, 6-11. The Terror returns to action on Thursday evening at Muhlenberg before wrapping up the season with Washington at home on Saturday. McDaniel must one at least one of those two games to earn the right to defend its back-to-back Centennial Conference Championships.

The Mules (24-2) will host Johns Hopkins in Sunday’s Championship finals, the first Conference finals without McDaniel (19-8) in uniform since the 2001 championship.
Lauren Boyle posted 19 points and 10 rebounds for Muhlenberg, while Meghan Courtney chipped in with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Mules got 12 points from Kristen Piscadlo.

55 seconds later, a Courtney lay-up put the Mules back in front for good. A Katy Powell (Smithsburg, MD / Smithsburg) turnover and a Thompson foul sent Boyle to the line for the Mules.
